Several Commonly Used Masks And Their Functions And Differences

Sep 12, 2020

The difference and function of the three commonly used masks, medical masks, medical surgical masks, and protective masks.

Medical masks

This is the most secretly purchased mask. It is useful for blocking the respiratory tract transmission of the virus, but it is not as effective as medical surgical masks and N95 masks. It is suitable for daily protection and is not suitable for medical visits.

The full name of this type of mask is "Disposable Medical Mask". It is more breathable and easy to buy. It can be purchased in general pharmacies. It can filter most of the bacteria. It is effective against this new type of coronavirus. The biggest disadvantage is that it has no anti-permeation effect and is not as effective. Medical surgical masks and N95 masks are suitable for daily outings in non-epidemic areas, but they are not suitable for close contact with the new coronavirus, nor for use in crowded places such as hospitals.

Medical surgical mask

Medical surgical masks are the most commonly used masks for medical staff. General surgical masks can be selected for contact with common infected patients, such as colds, pneumonia, treatment of common bacterial infection wounds, and surgical operations. Compared with ordinary masks, this kind of mask has better sealing performance. The biggest difference from ordinary medical masks is that it is anti-permeable. The particle filtration must be ≥30%. It is very effective in blocking the new coronavirus and is recommended. It is suitable for use in epidemic areas, hospitals and other densely crowded occasions, and is the most practical mask. In addition to high-risk positions in the hospital, workers in other positions can wear this mask for protection.

The protective mask has the strongest protective effect and the most expensive.

Protective masks implement the standard GB19038-2010, and N95 masks are commonly used in hospitals. N95 mask is one of the nine anti-particulate masks certified by NlOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health). "95" means that under the testing conditions specified in the NI0SH standard, the filtering effect of non-oily 0.3um particles reaches 95%. The biggest holding point of the N95 mask is to prevent droplet infection caused by the patient's body fluid or blood splash. The size of the droplet is 1 to 5 microns in diameter. When choosing N95, try not to choose a breathing valve.

Contact with patients with special infections, such as highly infectious patients such as SARS, H1N1 influenza, or viral pneumonia must wear N95 masks. For the general population, it is generally not necessary.

The correct way to wear surgical and protective masks:

Surgical mask

The standard surgical mask has a 3-layer structure (the outer layer is usually blue non-woven fabric for blocking body fluids, the middle layer is for adsorbing particles, and the inner layer is usually white for moisture absorption) + nose clip (adjust and fix according to the height of each person's nose Play airtight effect) + lace (two laces are fixed on the head); usually used in the operating room, aseptic operation and standard protection, etc., the role of take-off foam isolation.

The correct way to wear a surgical mask

(A) The mask has white and blue sides, with the white side facing in;

(B) Put on the mask, the soft metal strip should be upward;

(C) The headband is tied to the back of the head and the back of the neck respectively;

(D) Press the soft metal strip inward until the part is pressed into the shape of the bridge of the nose.

(E) When completed, the mask must cover the nose to the chin, close to the face.

N95 masks (belonging to a kind of respiratory protector) will be used in special times

N95 mask: It is one of the nine anti-particulate masks certified by NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health). "N" means unsuitable for oily particles; "95" means that the filtration efficiency reaches 95% under the testing conditions specified in the NIOSH standard. N95 is not a specific product name. N95 masks (a type of respiratory protective device) must be used in special epidemics (eg tuberculosis, SARS) for air isolation.

N95 mask wearing method

(A) Select the normal/small size model according to the face type, and loosen the headband. The soft metal strip is up and put your hand through the headband.

(B) Wear a mask and place the headband on the top of the head and behind the neck.

(C) Push the index and middle fingers of both hands from the top of the center to the sides at the same time to press the metal soft strip.

(D) Check properly

Correct inspection: lightly press the mask with both hands, and then deliberately exhale, air should not leak from the edge of the mask.

Negative pressure inspection: lightly press the mask with both hands, and then deliberately inhale, the center of the mask will be slightly sunken.
